Kuroush I (652BC-580BC)

Kuroush I (western: Cyrus I) was an early monarch of Persia, grandson of Hakhamanish and grandfather of Kuroush II the great. He is first mentioned around 652BC in Assyrian texts as Kuras of Parsumash and is noted to have alligned himself with Shamash Shum Ukin against his brother, the Assyrian monarch Ashurbanipal. Eventually Shamash Shum Ukin commited suicide and his rebellion was thwarted. Later Kuroush sided with Elam against Assyria, and when Elam was soundly defeated Kuroush was forced to pay tribute to Assyria. This continued until 612BC, at the battle of Nineveh, when Huvakhshtra the king of Media, in alliance with Nabopolassar the Babylonian king, defeated the Assyrians. Anshan and the surrounding areas fell into Median control. Kuroush continued to rule over the Anshan region until 580BC.

Now one of the issues with his reign is that it is massive, particularly for that time period. Also it must be noted that if he did rule that long, his son Kambujiyahya I must have been sired really late in life. It may very well have been that Kuroush from 652BC-580BC was actually referring to two people; perhaps Kuroush had a son also by the name of Kuroush. It seems possible, but impossible to tell without actual records or evidence. For now Kuroush of 652BC-580BC is remembered in the annals of history as one person. His grandson was to be Kuroush II the great.
