Darayavaush III took reign of the empire during turbulent times. Bagoi, the vizier, single-handedly began the chain of events that would lead to the collapse of the Persian empire. After Bagoi killed the two previous kings, Darayavaush took the throne and took the name of his predecessor (his real name had been Artashata). Bagoi, in his attempt to take the throne, tried to have him poisoned too. But Darayavaush learned of this plot, and forced Bagoi to drink the poison and suffer the same fate as the kings he had previously killed. With the corruption and instability around the empire Alexander soon invaded. Darayavaush struggled to raise an efficient army and lost the battle of Granicus, Issus, Guagamela. He fled east and was assasinated by his own satrap. And so closed this chapter in the history of Iran. |
